Porcelain Story
This old Japanese parable is about us. About us, my friends. About those who today - each in his place - are fighting against an enemy that has invaded our country, whose forces obviously exceed the capabilities of Ukraine. About those who, taking on some new business, torment themselves with doubts that it is beyond their power, that there was no need to even aim at it, that it was quite enough to confine oneself to small things. And these doubts are often so depressing that they don’t allow you to think about anything else, except for one that finishes a person every day: there was no need to get involved, because I won’t pull it ...
The gray-bearded professor who accompanied me on my trip to Japan was an excellent storyteller, with whom I would remember many hours of conversation for the rest of my life. He was not only a good storyteller, but also an excellent psychologist, able to look into the most secluded corners of the human soul. And he told me this parable, as I remember now, in a tiny restaurant in the center of Kyoto, where we decided to drink a small jug of hot sake in the evening.
- One brave warrior was returning home from a campaign. On the way he came across a river. The warrior had to find a boatman and ask him to help him get to the other side. When the boat reached the middle of the river, a ferocious dragon suddenly appeared from the water. Just then, a terrible storm arose. Huge waves tossed the boat from side to side, icy water and fear bound the body. And the dragon, watching this, only laughed evilly. Looking into the eyes of the fire-breathing dragon, the boatman dropped the oars and covered his face in horror with his hands.
- Why don't you row? - shouted the warrior.
- Why row? Can't you see that it's all useless? We're still going down the drain.
- I was taught differently - a person should not meekly wait for his death. We have to fight for life!
With these words, the warrior rushed into the water. The dragon, not expecting such courage, was momentarily taken aback. And this moment was enough for the dragon's head, cut off by a sharp samurai sword, to soon float to the surface of the river, which carried it downstream in a swift stream. The wind suddenly died down and there was silence...
“Many vicious creatures live only because everyone is afraid of them,” said the professor, pouring the cooled sake into small china cups. - Stop trembling before them - and they will not even dare to show themselves before you...
