Porcelain Story

There are several such horses in our collection. At first glance, they are very similar. But this is only at first glance. One of the horses, made in Valencia 30 years earlier, despite the same seemingly identical composition, looks somewhat more modest, more restrained. And its decoration is not so bright, and, executed in gres, it seems even more alive and natural. But this handsome man is certainly good too. Isn't he?

Every time I look at these horses, frozen against the backdrop of a large homemade tapestry that we brought from Brussels, I remember an old amazing story. In the capital of Belgium, we then lived with our little son Dima (he has now graduated from the university) for about a week. We went on excursions, visited museums, even in Waterloo we managed to escape for a short time.

But every evening we managed to go into the same old tapestry shop, located a hundred meters from the famous ''Manneken Pis''. Something really drew us to this nondescript semi-basement store. Although there were a huge number of shops selling tapestries of various manufactories around.

This store was like a museum. Hundreds of tapestries hanging on the walls and laid out on the floor depicted scenes from which it was impossible to take your eyes off ... We didn’t tear them off. And without a tapestry that we especially liked (a huge one - 5 by 3 meters!), which depicted a picture of the siege of an old French fortress, we could not return to Kyiv.

Years have passed. The Belgian tapestry had been hanging on the wall of our living room for many years, until suddenly the idea came to me to put two of these oriental porcelain horses in front of it - the old one and this one, younger. What was our amazement when we suddenly saw the same images of these horses - in the same pose! - on the Brussels tapestry! ..

I never cease to be amazed at the surprises that life sometimes throws at us. These horses are special. And by the huge size, and by the technique of execution, and by the power of perception of these amazing porcelain works. Among the dozens of equestrian porcelain compositions brought by us from many countries, they stand out not only for their size and handmade beauty but also an unusual story of their reunion with the plot of the tapestry, on which they froze as if in a wondrous reflection...
