Porcelain Story
It was in Kyiv that the world-famous designer and sculptor Jaime Hayon presented a series of amazing porcelain works created by his workshop commissioned by Lladro. Among the works presented in the Ukrainian capital earlier (!) than even in Valencia, his native Madrid and London, where Jaime lives now, there were two stunning vases with the same name ''Conversation''. These vases were purchased for our collection, in connection with which Jaime covered their base with many pleasant wishes addressed to our family.
But, introducing you to one of these ''philosophical'' vases, I wanted to tell you that today marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of a man whose books are known all over the world. And by the way, in the 1980s and 90s they were very popular and even fashionable with us. Reading and retelling them was even some kind of special chic. Although they were written, of course, for completely different purposes.
We're talking about Dale Carnegie. More specifically, about Dale Breckenridge Carnegie, an American educator, lecturer, writer and motivational speaker. He stood at the origins of the creation of the theory of communication, translating the scientific developments of psychologists of that time into a practical area and developing his own concept of conflict-free communication. His life was in its own way difficult and very full of serious upheavals. He had to get up at 4 am at one time to milk the cows. He happened to sell bacon, soap and lard. But everything he did was devoted to the realization of the main dream of his life - to become a teacher. And he became one. Moreover, he achieved great success both in teaching and in writing a number of books on this topic.
The most famous of these books was called How to Win Friends and Influence People. Released on November 12, 1936, it was translated into dozens of languages and became a real bestseller. Over a million copies have been sold in just one year! Some have heard about this book, others have read it for a long time and have already forgotten it. I will try to recall some of the advice that was given by Dale Carnegie and has not lost its relevance so far.
So here are a few ways to get people to like you:
- Show a lively and sincere interest in other people.
- Smile. This is a very easy way to make a great first impression.
- Address people by name.
- Try to be a good listener while encouraging your interlocutor to talk about himself.
- Speak on topics that interest your interlocutor.
- Try to instill in people the consciousness of their own importance.
Someone may notice: yes, these are common truths that should be known to every person who has managed to achieve something in this life. So, I tell you, my friends, it is in the seeming simplicity of common truths, as a rule, that the success of achieving the goal is hidden. Because of this, many of us neglect such common truths. And, believe me, in vain.
Here are some more tips that can persuade people to your point of view.
- Show respect for the opinions of others, never tell a person that he is wrong.
- Try to make your interlocutor speak more than you.
- Let your interlocutor feel that the idea belongs to him too, this will help you achieve cooperation.
- If you were wrong, admit it immediately and frankly.
- Appeal to noble motives more often.
If you want to get the interlocutor to change his position without offending him at the same time, do not rush to point out his mistake, it is better to start with praise and recognition of the person's merits. Before criticizing another, don't be afraid to talk about your past mistakes. Let the man save his own face.
Frankly, Dale Carnegie can be quoted endlessly. And, even if some of his advice seems controversial to you, there is nothing strange about it. We're all different. And absolutely universal advice for all occasions for each of us cannot be. But the fact that these recommendations make wise people want to think again is already a considerable merit of the author of the famous book.
The end.
