Porcelain Story

Many years ago, an auction was held in the hall of one of the Kyiv museums. Only a few handmade porcelain items were exhibited. All of them were made by the masters of our favorite Spanish manufactory. Moreover, it was this amazingly elegant composition that my wife and I saw live for the first time that evening, attracting my attention. Such auctions are extremely rare. Therefore, all the guests were not so much interested in participating in the auction as in demonstrating to those present their involvement in a narrow circle of admirers of fine porcelain art. I calmly skipped the auctions for other lots, since the exhibited works had already been presented in our collection by that time. But for these tender hands, with a rose literally just cut right from the bush, I was hooked in earnest. Moreover, I wanted to give my wife, at that time pregnant with Anya, a New Year's gift ...

I lost the desired porcelain composition at those auctions. No, I didn’t even lose, but deliberately conceded. Because I was not going to participate in unreasonably high price competitions. And several auction participants, carried away by public rivalry, did not pay any attention to the rapid growth of auction rates. For them at that moment it was important to win - at any cost. And one of them won this victory.

What was our surprise when, six months later, immediately after Anya's birth, a box of Spanish porcelain was sent to her wife's name. And this particular work was in this box!.. So the married couple who won that December auction, having learned that we really liked this composition, decided to congratulate us on the birth of a child. It was both unexpected, and pleasant, and memorable.

In our collection, among thousands of different works, I can always accurately name which works were donated and when. Well, and by whom, of course. Very rare and incredibly beautiful products in different years were given to us (especially when they learned that they would someday be exhibited in a museum) by well-known politicians, and businessmen, and fellow journalists, and famous doctors, and "real colonels" . It was especially nice to receive them as a gift from friends. As a sign of friendship and in memory of friendship. They are dear to us, regardless of their size and cost. Just very expensive.
