Porcelain Story

The disturbing events taking place on the remote Indonesian island of Bali made me once again turn to the memories associated with visiting this truly paradise on the other side of the world. The awakened powerful Agung volcano, whose height exceeds three thousand meters above sea level, caused the emergency evacuation of tens of thousands of people, mostly foreign tourists. I imagined 60 thousand passengers accumulated at the only airport of the island as a result of the cancellation of 450 (!) international flights - and I felt uneasy ...

General concern can be understood, because once the sluggishness of local authorities during the eruption of the same volcano that began, led to the tragic death of almost 10 thousand people.

Our visit to the exotic island, which took place many years ago, was calm and, fortunately, prosperous. That's just very short. Just a few days we were there with our fellow editors-in-chief as part of an official delegation. And this status, alas, did not allow us to move freely around the island. That is why we never managed to visit the famous monkey park and the no less famous turtle park. But we visited the ocean coast, where we stocked up on exotic souvenirs.

I, who was not yet fond of collecting porcelain, acquired a lot of multi-layered paintings, created by hand by local craftsmen from mahogany (although, to be honest, it was not red at all). I also managed to bring several carved sandalwood statues from there. Its smell stood in my office for several years, in which foreign products took their place.

We did not meet dancers on the island of Bali then. But dressed in the same clothes were the servants of the hotel in which we were these few days. Ten years after visiting Bali, I found the composition presented to your attention on one of the Australian ''porcelain'' sites - and as if plunged into sweet exotic memories. Since then, it has been in our collection, delighting the eye and warming the soul with its unusual beauty. Fortunately, despite its rather large size, it reached us without the slightest damage.
